On the lookout for a traditional luxury pret outfit? Finding something exceptional might be tougher than you’d expect
Deepak Perwani on Karachista
Headline designers need to channel more of their creativity into Eastern outfits.       Photo: Faisal Farooqui
With our headline designers concentrating on Western and fusion pret, finding the perfect traditional jora in the luxury pret range can be a challenge. Earlier this year, some of our top designers showcased their pret collections at Fashion Pakistan Weekand PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week. There was some fabulous cutting-edge fashion on display but a disproportionate amount of it was Western or fusion. Eastern wear needs the shake-up of cuts and concepts and redefinition of silhouettes and techniques that creative designers can spearhead. It’s an area that too many of our best designers are neglecting.

Ayesha Farook Hashwani's Photo Shoot stolen for rival's billboard
Motifz claims that even their logo was used in the advertisement without consent. PHOTO: PUBLICITY
It seems there is no limit to flagrant brand identity theft in Pakistan. Model Saima Chinoy spotted this billboard in Islamabad recently. Others would have barely noticed anything wrong but as the model in the picture, she was horrified to see the shoot she had done for designer Ayesha Farook Hashwani, was apparently advertising Motifz.

Motherhood Taboo: Post-Natal Depression

Post Natal Depression is rarely acknowdged in Pakistan despite affecting large numbers of new mothers
New motherhood is no picnic. The indignity of childbirth, stitches in unmentionable places, the physical marathon of labour, the month-long bleeding and more. It doesn’t matter how easy your pregnancy was or how much you wanted a baby, the reality of motherhood usually comes as a bit of a shock.

Pakistani Fashion designer rizwan beyg's truck art collection
Rizwan Beyg's famous take on truck art
The Trade & Development Authority Pakistan’s fashion show is usually little more than a blip on the fashion calendar. It was always a little-regarded adjunct to the annual EXPO, conscripted to add a little glamour to the proceedings but with a patchy or second-rate lineup. This year things were a little different. Some of the biggest names in Pakistani fashion came together to show on the platform. While the exercise may not have resulted in many concrete sales, it was a great advertisement for the best of Pakistani fashion.

PLBW Day 1 - Drama, Opulence and Edginess

HSY Tribute to Women collection

PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week opened with a very strong lineup on Day 1, with HSY, Elan and Sania Maskatiya headlining the show. Despite lackadaisical timekeeping sapping some of the energy of the evening, overall it was an impressive start to fashion week. The amount of individuality on the ramp was inspiring, as designers displayed very different spins on bridal couture.

It’s time to get smart about austerity. You’ve seen the plunging rupee and headlining inflation figures on the news but more than that you will have felt the pressure on your pocket. Whether you’re a member of the Birkin brigade or a low-paid blue-collar worker, you will be aware that money simply doesn’t stretch as far as it used to.

Day 2 of PLBW was perhaps the weakest day of fashion week with a mixed bag of collections. Misha Lakhani was by far the best although both Fahad Hussayn and Ali Xeeshan showed some great pieces and would both have fared better if they had chosen to show fewer pieces.

The third and final day of PLBW was by far the best – a super line-up and collections that lived up to the billing for the most part. Nomi Ansari provided the masala, Sana Safinaz the sophistication and Kami delivered an artistic showpiece that brought this fashion week to a spectacular end.

PLBW 2013 - Is it really Fashion? - Bridal Fashion Week in Pakistan

Does bridal wear merit a fashion week? The best bridals are essentially timeless whereas fashion weeks should be about trendsetting, innovation and artistic vision.
PLBW 2013 - Pakistani Bridal Wear - HSY
HSY opened PLBW with a classic collection
There’s no doubt that there are trends in bridal wear — long shirts versus short, farshis versus lenghas, deep colours versus pale and much more. Beyond this, times have changed. Bridal joras no longer need to overpower the brides, and brides no longer hide under heavy dupattas. They want to make a statement with their joras and enjoy being the centre of attention. Every bride wants to look unique and dreams of a jora that reflects her personality.

Extravagant Pirthday Parties Pakistan - cake from La Reve in Lahore
A designer cake from La Reve bakery in Lahore
The invitation was a cupcake inside a floral china teacup with a little golden spoon. The momento for guests to take home was a little jewellery box. The décor included little chandeliers and vintage Victorian-themed accessories. The affair had all the trappings of a major celebration except this wasn’t a wedding or coming of age party. This was a little girl’s birthday party in Karachi.

The Exchange for Change program aims to change attitudes in India and Pakistan at the grass roots level

Exchange for Change, Citizens Archive Pakistan, Karachi Exhibition
Visitors to the Citizen's Archive Pakistan Exchange for Change exhibition at Frere Hall
Peace between India and Pakistan occasionally appears within reach but more often seems nothing more than a fool’s pipe dream. There is so much ugly history and distrust between our two nations that it’s difficult to imagine the situation changing. It’s easy to bemoan the situation but some bright souls are actually spearheading initiatives like Exchange for Change to make peace more likely.

What reminds you of the UK whilst in Pakistan?

My winning entry to the blogging competition held by the British High commission in Islamabad.
Karachi
Karachi is a sprawling mixture of old and new
On the face of it there seems to be little in scorching Karachi to remind anyone of Britain apart from some oft-neglected architecture. The British Raj that built some of Pakistan’s finest old buildings may be long gone, but it has left isolated bastions of British-ness in the clubs formed by long-gone expats. The steamed puddings at Karachi Boat Club can transport me straight back to my school days in London while the wooden-paneled staircases of Sindh Club remind me of my days at Oxford.
